Chemical Guys car wash and detailing kit

The washing and drying basics: a mitt, two buckets and towels that do not drag grit across paint.

Car cleaning products, buckets and microfibre towels

Photograph illustrates the category, not this exact model.

What it is good at

  • Washing with two buckets so grit stays out of the wash water
  • Covering the routine in one kit: wash, dry, glass and a basic interior wipe-down
  • Replacing the items that wear out, such as mitts and towels, instead of the whole kit

Check before you buy

  • What is inside against what you already own — sets often repeat a product you have
  • Whether the products suit your finish, including a wrap, matte paint or freshly painted panels
  • Concentrate or ready-to-use, and how far a bottle actually goes

Who it is not for

Paint correction. Removing swirl marks and scratches needs a machine polisher, pads and compounds, which is a different purchase.

A wash kit is not about the shine; it is about not adding scratches while you clean. The two-bucket method, a soft mitt and a plush drying towel do more for a finish than any single bottle in the kit.

Buy concentrates where you can, since they cost less per wash and take up less shelf space, and replace the consumables — mitts, towels, applicators — as they pick up grit. Detailing is a routine of small habits rather than one product.

Best for
Anyone who wants to read and clear a check-engine light at home before booking a workshop.
Watch out for
A code names a circuit rather than a failed part. Two different faults can set the same code, and several unrelated codes at once often point at the battery or the charging system first.
