GearWrench ratcheting combination wrench set, metric

A wrench that keeps turning in a space where a socket and ratchet will not fit.

A row of combination wrenches arranged on a work surface

Photograph illustrates the category, not this exact model.

What it is good at

  • Turning a nut where there is no room to swing a ratchet handle
  • A ratcheting box end that allows a small arc of movement instead of a full swing
  • Sizes that match the fasteners used on most cars, in a roll or rack that stays organised

Check before you buy

  • Whether the set is metric, SAE or both — most modern cars are metric throughout
  • The mechanism: tooth count for arc size, and whether it can be cleaned or serviced
  • The direction lever, which should seat firmly rather than flipping mid-turn

Who it is not for

A fastener that has not moved in years. Break it free with a breaker bar or a six-point socket first.

The ratcheting combination wrench solves one specific problem: a fastener that a socket cannot reach and a plain wrench cannot turn for lack of swing room. The box end ratchets in small increments, so the handle needs far less space.

Buy the sizes your car actually uses and keep them on a rack where the missing one is obvious. The mechanism is the wear point, so a set whose wrenches can be replaced one at a time is a better long-term purchase than a fixed box.

TEKTON 3/8-inch drive socket set with 90-tooth ratchet

The everyday set: shallow and deep sockets, extensions and a ratchet that swings in tight spaces.

Best for
A first serious socket set for engine bay, bracket and interior work on a car or light truck.
Watch out for
Sets look similar in the case and differ in what is inside. Count the sizes you will use, check the drive size and confirm the sockets are six-point and chrome rather than impact-rated.

TEKTON 1/2-inch drive click torque wrench, 10 to 150 ft-lb

A wrench that turns tightening a wheel nut from a guess into the figure printed in the manual.

Best for
Wheel nuts, suspension bolts and anything else with a torque figure in the owner manual.
Watch out for
A torque wrench measures; it does not decide the number. Use the figure for your vehicle, re-check the wheel nuts after the first drive as most manuals advise, and wind the setting back before storing it.
